Grading System
- 65% Final Portfolio
- 25% Daily Work: Paper Drafts, Rewrites, Reflections, In-Class Writing, Reading Activities, Presentations, Etc.
- 10% Preparation and participation
Please note that you must achieve a D- to pass this course, though most programs require at least a C.
AttendanceAttendance is MANDATORY in this class! A writing class is a community and most classes will include collaborative work that cannot be replicated.
The maximum number of permissible absences--both excused and unexcused—is six. You cannot earn credit for this course if you miss more classes than this. You may withdraw from the course before you have exceeded this number of absences or you will receive an F for the course. You will be allowed to make up work for excused absences only, providing you have documentation. Classroom Behavior PolicyOne important note regarding cell phones and laptops: they are not allowed to be out during class. I understand that these devices can be VERY practical and useful, especially in college; however, it has been by overwhelming experience that these devices create more of a distraction and diversion from the work of my course. Every once in a while I will ask that you bring a laptop to class and in rare occasions there will be opportunity to use your phone. Otherwise, keep all electronic devices packed quietly AWAY. Violation of this policy will result in your losing points in your participation grade, and in extreme cases, I will request that you leave my class, and I will bring your behavior to the attention of the chair of the department of Writing Arts and the dean of College of Communication and Create Arts.

Excused absences include:
If you must miss class for any of the above or other excusable reasons, you must contact me as soon as possible. If extenuating circumstances force you to miss more than nine classes, you must speak to me about the possibilities for accommodating you beyond this. Make sure to be aware of how many absences you have and use them with discretion because you never know when you will suddenly have to miss class. |
